Episode 8 - Aperture, f-stop & Depth of Field
SBweekly.tv - Episode 8
Aperture, f-stops, the strange numbers and DOF (Depth of field)
Aperture - the opening of a lens's diaphragm, calibrated in f/stops and written as f/1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 and 16. Lower f/stops allow more light onto the sensor, therefore equal larger apertures. Higher f/stops result in less exposure and therefore are smaller apertures.
Depth of field is the are of “acceptable” sharpness in front of and behind the subject on which a lens is focused on. Lower f/stop create less depth of field (more Bokeh (or blurry background), higher f/stop (smaller opening of the iris) results in greater depth of field (sharper background).
